No New Retreats

It's been fairly obvious but I just wanted to update everyone that there will be no retreats in the near future.   Life has gotten in the way with providing this service so, for now, I will be focusing on other areas of my life. Maybe someday when things slow down I will start them up again and you will be the first to know.  I will leave past posts on here for reference as well as include any new projects I am working on or have completed.

Thanks to you all for your past support.  It was a fun ride.

Swirlydoos Challenge

Well, I did not win the Design Challenge but I got some layouts done and I learned some new techniques so, all in all, definitely worth while.  Maybe next time.

Looking forward to my retreat this Saturday and then a weekend away with the girls.  Woo Hoo!!!

Cheers,

Swirlydoos Ultimate Design Challenge Week 6

Here is my entry for the final week of the challenge.

The sketch that this is based on and the rules regarding the challenge can be found here.  We had to recreate most of the techniques used throughout the challenge on this last entry.

I also need to explain how and what I did to get to my final creation.  I will first apologise for the lack of quality in the photographs as my scrapbooking time is usually done in the evening with horrible lighting and I have yet to set up a little studio for these shots.
But, you'll get the idea, so here goes.

First I used molding paste all over a white 12 x 12 sheet.

Once that was dry I added glass bead medium and natural sand resin randomly on the page.

I then misted with Glimmer Mist in gold, silver, copper, cinnamon and chocolate to get the final result on the background.

The extra technique of my choice was to do the technique we learned in week 3.  I used tinfoil pasted to paper to cut out the gear shape, strip and mattes, then coloured them with rust, latte and stream alcohol ink.  I dry embossed the mattes and the strip with my Cuttlebug.

Using a mask I made, I added the wings with molding paste.

I tried to do as much layering as I could but I didn't want to take away from the background by using too much patterned paper. So, I used burlap circles instead.

For the title I used 3 different embossing powders to get the texture and colour I wanted.

Putting it together I clustered the photos the way I thought they looked best and pulled it together with gears from 7 Gypsies and Dusty Attic, bottle caps from Momenta, stick pins and bling from Prima.

I actually had 2 ideas in my head with regards to this challenge and couldn't make up my mind which to do so, I did both simultaneously.  I preferred the one above so that is my official entry.

Here is the second one:

The next couple of days is going to be nerve wracking waiting for the judge's decision.  I wish good luck to all those left in the challenge.  It has been a pleasure.

I better get started.

Swirlydoos Ultimate Design Challenge Week 5 Entry

So this weeks challenge was to create pages of an art journal.

An art journal.

Just the word journal sends me screaming in the opposite direction.  My scrappy friends can tell you.  They make fun of me if I try to attempt an explanation or storyline on my layouts because they know how much I hate doing it.  I wish I was more articulate of the written word, but alas, I am not!

Anyway, this is an art journal.  I have found out that there are as many definitions for art journal as there are people in the world.  The video looked very simple and it was quite apparent to me what we had to come up with but then all these questions started coming up from the the other challengers.  It seemed that this may not be as easy as I first thought. After googling and skulking around the internet, I decided that I was going to stick with my original plan and just do what I was told.  But, I hate to make things that I am not going to use, so I thought I would make it into a gift.  I found a spiral bound book that I no longer use and started on the cover, even though that was not part of the challenge.  We needed to make 2 or 4 journal pages to showcase to the judges.  I made this into a travel art journal using scraps from travel paper I had left over from an album.

I didn't plan out my pages I just winged it with whatever I thought looked good, using new techniques I have discovered along the way.  I used Resin sand, Gesso, shells, gauze. burlap, grunge board, embossed paper and lots of paint.

Here is the cover:

Pages 1 to 4

Again, all the entries are very different and I don't know how the judges do it.  Here is the gallery.  I'm not feeling overly confident about this round but I will let you know on Monday what happens.
